He is famous for his dramatic and comedic roles and is considered an American iconic cultural figure. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Janet Marylyn a hospital worker as well as Amos Mefford Hanks, an chef who traveled the world. His mother, originally called "Fraga" was part of a Portuguese family. His father was mostly English. Tom was born into what he has called an "fractured" family. He had no acting experience in college, and credits his inability to be cast in a college production as the reason for his beginning career. He went to downtown and tried to audition for a local theater play, was requested by the director of that play to go to Cleveland and then his acting career started
